Tea of the Month

Monks Blend Tea

Country of Origin: Sri Lanka
Cup Characteristics:
Medium bodied and flavoury with piquant Ceylon character. Blended with natural flavor oils of vanilla and grenadine, which impart a smooth and unique heavenly flavor.
Ingredients:

Luxury black tea, Calendula + Sunflower petals, Natural flavors.

Certainly a ‘mysterious’ blend despite being a delicious mixture of grenadine and vanilla. Perhaps first created by Tibetan monks – infused with universal life energy, this tea is a perfect all day treat; sweet and toasty with a touch of dryness and a subtle bouquet. Originally, it is believed that this blend was developed by monks to support their life’s desires, especially the work that they did all by hand. Tea is an item that these monks considered good for the soul. Franciscan monks used to drink this tea to keep them awake during long periods of meditation. It is fair to say that this is an ancient and harmonious blend, as it is also used by Buddhist and Taoist monks.

What type of tea do we use, how do we flavor the tea and why do we use natural flavors? Firstly... we only use high grown teas from the top 3 tea growing regions of Sri Lanka - Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula and Uva. These three high-grown districts produce flavorful teas that have classic ‘Ceylon’ tea character which is noted by floral bouquet and flavor notes, touches of mild astringency, bright coppery color and, most importantly - perfect for use as the base tea of our flavored teas. (We have tested teas from various other origins around the world as base stock for our flavored teas, but none of these teas made the grade.) Dimbula and the western estates of Nuwara Eliya have a major quality peak during Jan/Feb, whereas Uva and the eastern estates of Nuwara Eliya have their peak in July/Aug. This ‘dual peak period’ allow us to buy the best for our flavored tea blends several times during the year, ensuring top quality and freshness.

Secondly... we use flavoring oils not crystals to give the tea drinker an olfactory holiday before indulging in a liquid tea treat. Thirdly… we specify natural flavors. High quality tea tastes good and natural flavors do not mask the natural taste of the high grown Ceylon tea. (The norm for many making flavored tea is to use overpowering artificial flavors, which can be used to hide lower quality tea). Natural flavors do not leave an aftertaste giving the tea a clean and true character. It should be noted that natural flavors tend to be somewhat ‘soft ‘ and the flavors slightly muted, but for many this is a refreshing change and one of the desired attributes of our naturally flavored teas.

Hot tea brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 teaspoon of tea for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea). Even though milk and a dash of sugar help enhance the flavor character on this tea, it is perfectly acceptable to consume this tea ‘straight-up’.

Iced tea-brewing method (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 teaspoons of tea into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the leaves. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water]. Please note that this tea may tend to go cloudy or ‘milky’ when poured over ice; a perfectly normal characteristic of some high quality black teas and nothing to worry about!

We have great gift ideas for teachers and grads!

Palm Readings

Palmistry is an ancient art thought to have originated in the East more than 5000 years ago.  The interpretation of the general characteristics of one's hands, the study of the lines, their patterns and other formations and marks, which appear on the palms and fingers, can tell you about the major events in a person’s life and give some insight into the possibilities of the future.  Palmistry may relate to the personality, talents, mental and physical conditions, subconsciously planned lifestyle tendencies and modes of interaction with others.

Going on an Inner Vacation

By Susan Verhoogt, Reiki Master & Intuitive Life Coach @ the Divine Mine

The weather is warming up, the sun is shining and one can feel the excitement growing in the air. Vacation time is here! People are cleaning out their motor homes and campers after a long, cold winter, ready to go on an adventure. Ready to venture out, enjoy and have fun.

A few days ago I was looking out the window and saw a beautiful motor home drive by – off on an adventure. Just that sight made me ponder over the idea of vacation. How strange, that we work all year, day in day out, only to have a few weeks of the year to enjoy our ‘freedom’. We do this year after year, set money aside for our pension so that when we reach the right age, we can retire and enjoy our freedom. It is commonly known that quite a few people feel unnecessary when they retire, they get bored, and wish they could work again. How bizarre – when we work we want to take off, and when we can have the time off we want to work again.

As “coincidence” has it, right after I noticed this I came across a few talks on you tube by Paramahamsa Nithyananda about this phenomenon of going on vacation and freedom. He explains beautifully why it is that we want to go to an unknown place. Deep inside all of us is an underlying feeling of always longing for a holiday. The interesting thing is, a lot of the time once we reach the destination we are somehow not able to totally relax and enjoy. Why is that?

Right before I moved to Canada from Holland nine years ago my colleague then told me: No matter where you go, there you are! And he was right! Where ever we go, we carry with us the identity of who we think we are. When we travel with family we still play our role – we behave in ways that they expect us to based on who we’ve been. That is also the reason why we feel the desire to go somewhere new, where nobody knows us, where we can sort of ‘re-invent’ ourselves. It may look outwardly that we are just enjoying the scenery, but in truth we want a break from ourselves – the identification with who we think we are.

What if vacation is not a geographical place, but simply a state of mind? You can be on a vacation 24/7, even if you are working in the office. You can be retired now, regardless of your age. When we relax from our identity, of who we think we are, of who we think others see us, of how we think society wants us to be, we can experience this freedom. It is not difficult; simply become totally centered in your being. How? Surround yourself with ‘positivity’ as much as you can – inspiring music, people, etc. To the best of your ability, bathe your 5 senses in beauty – what you hear, see, smell, taste and feel. Avoid watching or listening to the news, and avoid gossip. Most of all: be completely present in your physical body. Whatever the experiences are through the five senses, experience them completely. Don’t stress about it and think: oh no, I can’t do that, I’ll forget! I won’t have the time to do that!
No. Just whenever you think about it, place your awareness on your experience. That’s all. Most of all: Just Enjoy! Relax, and enjoy the practice. That is enough.

Formal Name Change

Hereby I would like to let you know that I have received my spiritual name from Paramahamsa Nithyananda when I was in India. I am legally going to change my name. My new name is: Ma Ananda Sangavasini, or Sangavasini for short. “Sanga” means “community” and “Vasini” means “dweller” in sanskrit. So the translation for my whole name is “Blissful Dweller of the Sanga”. Nithyananda meditates on your energy and the name that he gives is the name that resonates with your life path, it will remind you every time someone speaks your name.

I feel very blessed with such a beautiful name as it feels like this name is perfect for me. Anybody who knows me knows how much I enjoy being in the community and connecting with people!

Many Blessings,
Sangavasini (formerly known as Susan Verhoogt)
