Tea of the Month

Winter Palace Marzipan Rooibos

Country of Origin: South Africa
Grade: Choice Grade #1
Cup Characteristics:
What a tea! Premium Moroccan almonds give the German inspired marzipan a magnificent boost.
Rooibos and marzipan were meant for each other.
Ingredients:

Luxury Rooibos, Almond pieces, Natural dried papaya, Natural flavors.

So what exactly does a tisane that blends South African Rooibos with Moroccan almonds and marzipan have to do with an 18th century Russian palace? Great question. It’s a long and convoluted tale.
St. Petersburg’s Winter Palace was commissioned by Catherine the Great and built between 1754 and 1762. As it goes, the architect that was charged with designing the opulent structure, with its 1,786 doors and 1,945 windows, was an Italian named Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Rastrelli, knowing nothing of Russia or Catherine the Great, naturally wanted to bring the comforts of home with him to his new city. For the architect this included the sweet taste of Marzipan, or in Italian Marzipane, made famous by the artisans of Palermo who molded the confection to resemble fresh fruit. In particular, he loved a special version made with Moroccan almonds, imported to Sicily via Tunisia. In his traveling chests he stockpiled enough to last him through his first season.
Unbeknownst to Rastrelli his patron, Catherine the Great, was also a lover of Marzipan. However, owing to her German descent, she was born Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst, it was typically the Germanic version of the sweet treat she craved. Unbeknownst to Rastrelli, Catherine the Great was also a great lover of the men-folk. One day while casually enjoying a papaya shaped piece of Marzipan after lunch, Catherine spotted him in the hall. It was love at first sight. Rastrelli offered her some of his dessert, Catherine acquiesced and offered him…well…we can’t go there. In the end, the Winter Palace was completed a little behind schedule perhaps, but at least the architect had a smile on his face.
As in the immortal words of Jack Palance: “Believe it or not”. To celebrate the fortuitous nature of this historical meeting we’ve blended this fantastic herbal tea with Rooibos, almond pieces, dried papaya and natural flavors. Enjoy the almond-like flavors of love.

Hot tea brewing method:
Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 teaspoon of tea for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea). Even though milk and a dash of sugar help enhance the flavor character on this tea, it is perfectly acceptable to consume this tea ‘straight-up’

Iced tea brewing method: (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 teaspoons of tea into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the leaves. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water]. Please note that this tea may tend to go cloudy or ‘milky’ when poured over ice; a perfectly normal characteristic of some high quality black teas and nothing to worry about!

In Eternal Bliss

By Susan Verhoogt, Reiki Master & Intuitive Life Coach @ the Divine Mine

First of all I want to start off with thanking everybody from the depths of my being for supporting me in so many different ways to go to India. With a gratitude that is beyond words I would like to let you know that the mission is accomplished with all of your help, I am writing this article from Nithyananda’s ashram in India!!!! I know that without you I wouldn’t have been able to go. How can I ever thank you? One of the ways to show my gratitude will be through sharing, let’s start with an article followed by meditations and yoga when I come back in April as I will be as Nithya yoga teacher upon my return. As you read between the lines allow yourself to be filled with gratitude and bliss as this article is infused with it!

I would like to dedicate this month’s article to our true nature, which is eternal bliss. Our true nature is blissful, spontaneous, ever creative and never tires. Over many years of conditioning this playfulness has been clouded over mostly with fear and guilt. It is time to come home, to relax into our true nature and experience life of joy, bliss and gratitude. It is time to claim our birth right. Can you imagine what life would be like if we would not live in fear anymore? Watch yourself over the course of the day and you will be amazed at how many times we are hit with fear. Even about seemingly little things, like not remembering if we locked the door when we left for work, or when we get cut off in traffic can cause a tremendous amount of stress on us that interferes with our inner space. Seemingly small events but with a huge impact on our happiness and joy of life.

So, what is being blissful all about? It is not about walking around in airy fairy land all day long and not do anything. It is quite the opposite: it is about going with the flow, accomplishing tasks that need to get done but without the what I call “inner commentary” and stress. It will be done efficiently and joyfully. Imagine what life would look like if every morning you wake up, excited about yet another day to come, full of adventure. When was the last time that that happened? This has nothing to do with our outer circumstances, but everything with our inner world. Through meditation and awareness we can start to see that we have a choice, that we are not at the mercy of our mind. Our mind can become a friend instead of our enemy. I will share more about that in the next article.

Just for today, look at what you feel fearful for. Just see it, that’s all. There is nothing that needs to be done. When you bring awareness to it, it will simply dissipate.

May you be filled with joy and bliss!

Love and smiles,
Susan

Holiday Triggers

By Kristyne Dahl, Hypnotherapist & Spiritual Counselor @ the Divine Mine

Many people enjoy the holiday season looking forward to it all year long, but it’s important to acknowledge that many people are silently suffering from stress & pressure from the holiday season. Many people think of the holidays fondly for the majority of the year but as the season draws closer the stress and pressure begin to emerge. Sometimes people are unaware of this happening then find themselves overwhelmed long before they ever noticed any signs of the stress building up.

This stress & pressure is especially true in times like now, where money, time & energy can all be a challenge. So I am writing this article in hopes that I can help you (in a very simple way) to help yourself.  I want you to begin to focus on your experience the next time you go into any kind of store at all. In this case I want you to think about the holidays as you’re there. When I say your experience I mean what you are feeling, seeing, hearing, and knowing internally & externally.  For example; when you hear the Christmas music playing, how does it make you feel? Do you find yourself relaxing as you look forward to your holidays or do you find yourself beginning to think about Christmas & how quickly it’s coming, ultimately bringing on a multitude of stress inducing thoughts? Do you feel over stimulated by holidays reminders (decorations, trees, presents, music, or even the hustle and bustle of the shoppers)?

The idea is that the more you become attuned to your automatic responses in any given environment and to any specific stimuli the more information you have, and the more information you have the more power you have.  The power is that by learning the “triggers” to stress inducing energy you can now make a choice. Actually you have 3 choices, they are:

1st – Avoid the “trigger” altogether,

2nd – Reframe the “trigger” to a more empowering one,

3rd – Do nothing at all.

In my opinion it is in your best interest to reframe the “trigger” as this will enable you to work smarter not harder. You see by reframing the automatic response occurring when you encounter the “trigger” you create a new empowering and positive response that occurs without the need for conscious thought or effort.  This enables you to create more positive experiences going forward throughout your life each and every time you encounter the “trigger” on the subconscious level.

Ultimately up to now and going forward from here you reinforce a response you create subconsciously the first time you accept a specific “suggestion”, we call this an imprint. This imprint dictates the response created automatically each time you subsequently encounter the same “trigger/situation”. You simply reinforce the automatic response subconsciously without your conscious knowledge.

So getting back to shopping especially now over the holidays, there are Christmas decorations everywhere, reminders of presents to buy, responsibilities to fill, all while the music plays cheerfully in the background. To some this music is a cheerful reminder to think of all of the fond memories and look forward to creating new ones, while for others the music is just another brick added to the load of pressure already being carried around with them.

Think about you for a moment, which one you are? By participating in this exercise where you focus on your experiences (internally & externally) while shopping you will be able to identify which one you are. So are you the one looking forward or are you feeling the stress? If you are the one who is looking forward to the holidays then surround yourself with the visual, audio & kinesthetic reminders as often as possible to heighten that positivity.

If you are however, the one who is feeling negative effects there is something very simple you can do today, let me explain, you can use your mind to reframe the imprint so that instead of experiencing stress/pressure you experience peace and calm, maybe even a little joy and excitement if that’s what you would prefer. So once you identify what the negative presenting response is currently (in this case it would be stress/pressure) then you can go ahead and decide what would you rather have as an automatic response to the “trigger” going forward from here.

Once you have clearly decided upon what you would rather do then you will want to meditate. Once you enter into a place of total peace and calm then begin to focus on the “trigger”, so to make it easy let’s say the Christmas decorations or music playing at the stores is the trigger. While you focus on this trigger begin to notice any stress or tension in your body. If you find any, then simply focus on the stress/tension and imagine the feelings are beginning to dissipate. Repeat this wherever you may feel that stress/tension until you are left feeling positive in every way.

Then once you have dissolved all of those negative feelings then you can begin to recall a holiday when you had an amazing positive memory/experience. If you can’t recall one from your experience that’s ok, just imagine your ideal holiday in your mind. See it, feel it, hear it, and know it. Recreate the positive experience you have had before or take a few moments to create it now.

Again focusing on the trigger I want you to call up all of the positive feelings and emotions you can, all of the feelings and emotions you wish to experience instead. Once you feel completely consumed with the positive feelings and emotions you can return to the present time and space.

Do this 10-15 times in a short period of time and you will begin to feel the stress and tension disappear completely. It doesn’t have to take long, maybe 5 minutes or so. It’s something very simple yet very profound to help you make the best holiday season for you and your family.

*Another quick tip – If you feel financially stressed or pressured especially right now due to the holiday season then take a second and say these simple words to the universe:  “More money please!”  Then repeat this as often as you remember and then get on with your day. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn that the universe is listening.

Also, if you would like help to learn how to meditate join us for a great opportunity to learn (from one of the best groups in the city) on December 2nd for our Full Moon Meditation. You’ll have a great opportunity to relax, become balanced and surround yourself with other people of like mind. You deserve it!

Sun in Sagittarius 2009

By Carl Klimuk, Astrologer, Master Herbologist & Wholistic Practitioner @ the Divine Mine

Aries
Take charge and be a leader this month.  You are being asked to take command and deal with responsibilities that you may have been neglecting.  Because of excess work, take the time to release stress through physical exercise and try to remember to balance your outer world responsibilities with your inner world responsibilities.   This is also a good time for you to plan and create structure for your future.

Taurus
This is a good month to have social gatherings in your home or in the homes of your family or friends.  This is also a good month to renovate, fix up or clean things within your home as well.  Family reunions are possible or just getting in touch with family that you haven’t called or been in touch with in awhile are in order.  Emotionally it is a social month with gatherings amongst friends as well as being invited out more.

Gemini
It’s time to express your unique ideas in a creative way.  This is a month that feels somewhat chaotic at times but is a good month to change or makeover your appearance or how you express yourself.  This is a month for you to be seen and heard!  Show the world your unique viewpoints and ideas.  You are also being asked to break from routine and find ways to have fun and enjoy yourself more especially with friends.

Cancer
It’s time to organize your artistic potential this month.  Are you sacrificing your health because of work?  Pay attention to your body’s needs, more sleep and rest will help to strengthen you. Dreams will be particularly active and powerful this month, so pay attention!  Find purpose in the work you do no matter how small, a greater sense of gratification and fulfillment will be the result.  Strengthen your faith and belief in all things by judging less.

Leo
Be comfortable with who you are, you are being asked to not worry about the opinions of others.  Many of you will be asked to take on leadership roles and exercise your self-confidence muscles.  Find the courage and bravery to express yourself.  Find pleasure and indulge in creative pursuits, games, sports and entertainment related activities.  Reconnect with children or your inner child.  You are also being asked to remember the lessons of receiving, accepting and gratitude.

Virgo
Find something that will help you laugh this month. Go see a comedy, read light hearted material.  Communicate your ideas to those who will listen.  Multitasking may take up a lot of time and energy from being able to give back to yourself, remember you’re not a robot!  A very social month for you, you may find yourself entertaining others or others trying to entertain you.  Expect many invitations this month, mingle and have fun!

Libra
Find the time to beautify your surroundings, clean up and balance any areas of your home that need it.  This could be a period of reflection for you, so don’t be surprised if you’re feeling a little bit “anti-social” this month.  Find the time to curl up with a good book. Personal insecurities may rise; reconnect with what makes you a beautiful person on the inside.  This is also a good time for you to balance your financial books and deal with any banking related issues.

Scorpio
This is a time for you to organize and clear up any clutter.  This is a good time for you to release and detoxify anything that is no longer serving you.  From bad habits to old junk in the basement; even work or a job that has been holding you down.  The reason for all of this clearing is to make room for greater creativity and personal growth. In between all of this reorganizing and cleaning take the time to have some fun, go to the movies, play some games, remember the nature of having fun is to “lighten up” which is what you’ve been trying to do!

Sagittarius
Happy birthday Sagittarius!  Personal transformation will be a common theme.  There’s a lot you want to change in your life perhaps, it could be a job, a relationship, or maybe even your personal appearance.  A new wardrobe beckons, a new look for some area of your life is called for.  Maybe you’re also trying to express yourself or your needs within a personal relationship.  This is a time for you to learn or remember where and how to share yourself, your gifts, talents and experiences with the world.

Capricorn
This is a time for you to reorganize your thoughts and ideas.  It’s time to stop dreaming and time to start planning.  This is decision making time, no more putting things off or procrastinating.  Don’t be surprised if people are asking you for advice or help this month, fixing up the problems of other people may also become the norm.  Set boundaries so you can deal with your own life as well.

Aquarius
You’re in exploration mode this month.  Some of you may need some more personal space especially from the relationships in your life.  This is a period of growth for you within your personal relationships; some grow and expand while others break off.  Share what you have learned with the world, this is a time of secrets being revealed!  Investigation, research and analysis pay off big with knowledge as the reward.

Pisces
This is a month of education for you.  There will be a great hunger to learn, explore and ask questions.  Long sought after answers may finally come. This could be a time when certain philosophies or beliefs that you have had begin to change.  Spend more time in bookstores, browsing the web, traveling or take up classes or workshops in subjects that interest you.  This could also be a time for financial growth and opportunity.
